Michelle Obama dined on pistachio-crusted chicken breast with coconut-ginger chili sauce and string vegetables. The president ordered the grouper special.

The White House is planning a concert this month to honor Stevie Wonder, whose music provided part of President Barack Obama’s campaign soundtrack.

The White House says the president and first lady Michelle Obama will present Wonder a Library of Congress award on Feb. 25. The concert will be broadcast the next day on PBS as part of its “Performance at the White House” series.

The award-winning and chart-topping Wonder performed at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on the night Obama accepted his party’s nomination. He also performed at a concert during the week of Obama’s inauguration.

His song “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” became a theme song during the campaign. Obama also used “Higher Ground” during campaign stops.

Barack Obama calls Kevin Rudd

US President Barack Obama has phoned Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to offer his condolences over the bushfires and offer US help in fighting the bushfires in Victoria.

“The president offered his prayers to the people of Australia and his condolences to the victims,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

“The president asked if the US could provide assistance to the government and people of Australia to assist with the fire.”
The call came as a contingent of senior US fire personnel prepared to fly to Australia to help battle the killer bushfires.

Michelle’s Life

Michelle  Obama nee Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born January 17, 1964 in in Chicago, Illinois and is now the  First Lady of the United States, and the wife of the forty-fourth President of the United States, Barack Obama. She is the first African American First Lady.

Her parents are Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian Shields Robinson, a secretary at Spiegel’s catalog store.  She grew up on Euclid Avenue in the South Shore community area of Chicago, and was raised in a conventional two-parent home. The family ate meals together and also entertained together as a family by playing games such as Monopoly and by reading. She and her brother, Craig (who is 21 months older), skipped the second grade. By sixth grade, Michelle joined a gifted class at Bryn Mawr Elementary School (later renamed Bouchet Academy).She attended Whitney Young High School.

She graduated from high school in 1981 and went on to major in sociology and minor in African American studies at Princeton University, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985.  She obtained her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Harvard Law School in 1988. While at Harvard, she participated in political demonstrations advocating the hiring of professors who are members of minorities. She is the third First Lady with a postgraduate degree, following Hillary  Clinton and Laura Bush. In July 2008, Obama accepted the invitation to become an honorary member of the 100-year-old black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, which had no active undergraduate chapter at Princeton when she attended.

She met Barack Obama when they were among very few African Americans at their law firm, Sidley Austin, and she was assigned to mentor him while he was a summer associate. Their relationship started with a business lunch and then a community organization meeting where he first impressed her. The couple’s first date was to the Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing. The couple married in October 1992, and they have two daughters, Malia Ann (born 1998) and Natasha (known as Sasha) (born 2001)After his election to the U.S. Senate, the Obama family continued to live on Chicago’s South Side, choosing to remain there rather than moving to Washington, D.C. Throughout her husband’s 2008 campaign for President of the United States, she made a “commitment to be away overnight only once a week—to campaign only two days a week and be home by the end of the second day” for their two children.

Barak Obama’s Life

Barack Hussein Obama II  was born at the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Stanley Ann Dunham, a European American from Kansas,and Barack Obama, Sr., a Luo from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Kenya. Obama’s parents met in 1960 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was a foreign student on scholarship. The couple married on February 2, 1961. Obama’s parents separated when Obama was two years old, and they divorced in 1964. Obama’s father then returned to Kenya and sadly only saw his son once more before dying in an car  accident in 1982.

Barak’s Mother later married Indonesian student Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Indonesia where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old when he returned to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. His mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995.

Following high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at Occidental College for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations Obama graduated with a B.A. from Columbia in 1983. He worked for a year at the Business International Corporation and then at the New York Public Interest Research Group. Obama entered Harvard Law School in late 1988 and graduated in 1991, when he returned to Chicago.

Barak Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, succeeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from Illinois’s 13th District, which then spanned Chicago South Side neighborhoods from Hyde Park-Kenwood south to South Shore and west to Chicago Lawn. Once elected, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws.

In mid-2002, Obama began considering a run for the U.S. Senate; he enlisted political strategist David Axelrod that fall and formally announced his candidacy in January 2003. He received over 52% of the vote in the March 2004 primary, emerging 29% ahead of his nearest Democratic rival.

Obama was sworn in as a senator on January 4, 2005. Obama was the fifth African-American Senator in U.S. history, and the third to have been popularly elected. On February 10, 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States.
